Rottnest Island Tearooms

JCY were chosen from a select group of architects nominated by the State Government as having the required design skills, resources and ability to undertake high public profile projects.

The new facility provides seating for 150 patrons inside with a further 100 seats on the verandah. The building was designed so that the degree of openness is totally flexible by way of folding doors along the north, south and eastern sides of the dining area. This allows unwanted breezes to be excluded yet also invites cooling breezes when desired.

The project also involved the construction of a meandering boardwalk, which links the ferry jetty to the hotel and creates interest and life to the outlook from the Tearooms.

Over the road a new public ablution block was designed to cater for the needs for the ‘boaties’ in Thomson Bay.

The design of the Tearooms was very much dictated by the location selected being virtually on the beach, nestled between a delicate dunal vegetation system and well established strip of peppermint trees of great environmental and heritage significance.

The building form was intended to be light, delicate and low scale to sit comfortably above the beach but below the tree-line so as not to dominate when approached from Thomson Bay.

This project was completed in a tight time-frame on a restricted site and within budget.
