This project for a Transit Station in the Rockingham City Centre is located adjacent to the district’s primary intersection. The design integrates a below grade railway station with bus transfer, Park & Ride, Kiss & Ride, cycle and pedestrian facilities at grade. A large roof structure consisting of a series of barrel vaults provides cover to all elements of the project, as well as creating a dramatic frontage and strong visual ‘edge’ onto a proposed transit mall.
The transfer of patrons between the various modes of transport follows clear and logical travel paths, with all patrons arriving and departing through a single, secure point of entry.
The safe egress of patrons from below grade during emergency scenarios is a key feature of the station planning.
A large elliptical opening over the platforms enhances the spatial characteristics at platform level and allows for some connectivity between the functions of the transit services and the rhythm of life in the City Centre district. The area around the station void provides the opportunity for development of a key public place, lacking within the city centre, with prime retail frontage created along the perimeter.
The project was discontinued following amendments to the SWMR Masterplan for the Rockingham Area.
