Learmonth International Airport

Learmonth International Airport services the Exmouth region and the world renowned Ningaloo Reef and was designed for the Shire of Exmouth and the Gascoyne Development Commission. This building was awarded the 2000 Public Institutional Award, 2000 BHP Colorbond Steel Award and the coveted George Temple Poole Award 2000.

The Airport building has been designed to create an emotive and exciting gateway to the region for overseas visitors and local tourists alike. Set in the red landscape of the Cape Range Area between the Ningaloo Reef and the ExmouthGulf the airport has been designed as a colourful intrusion into the landscape.

The main halls of the airport, located on either side of a central service spine have been designed to be reminiscent of the wonderful cavernous volumes of the whale shark with the external louvres reminiscent of gills. The colours were inspired by the myriads of colourful fish of the Ningaloo Reef and range from yellows, oranges and reds through to vibrant blues and greens.

The furniture and coloured glass canopies are inspired by the reefs creatures including star fish, nudibranches and jelly fish.

The whole experience of being in the Airport has been designed to be a reminder of being underwater and in the reef environment. Tourists worldwide remember the beauty of natural environments and the wonder of unique exciting buildings. The Airport provides a vivid built memory of Exmouth and the region which will be remembered hand in hand with the incredible beauty of the environment.
