JCY were the architects engaged by EMCO as part of a team to deliver a major redevelopment of the HBF Arena as a Design and Construct contract for VenuesWest and the Department of Finance.
The Project involves the construction of a new 4 court multi-purpose sports hall located adjacent the current courts in the existing Arena complex, a major refurbishment of the existing WAFL change-room facilities under the football stadium grandstand seating, and a new two-storey Administration, Change-room and Training facility for the West Perth Falcons WAFL Football Club.
The sports hall provides 3 multi-purpose sports courts and a fourth, dedicated FIBA2 basketball show-court with 540 seat grandstand. Also as part of the hall development is a new Administration Centre for the local State Basketball Club, State-Grade change-room and shower facilities and a new club-room at first floor overlooking the show court.
The hall is designed with ultimate flexibility of use in mind however, given that VenuesWest have a brief that this can be used as a function space equally as a sports hall, all services and amenities have been designed to cater for 1800 people in events mode.
The football facilities provide a dedicated new 2-storey building to be occupied by the football club, providing New ticketing and Entrance Gates to the ground, a merchandise outlet, Administrative facilities for the club, a state of the art players briefing/lecture theatre, change-room facilities including Medical, Trainers and Match Review and a new Gym and Players Warm-up area all located on ground floor and located at the South-West wing of the football ground. The new Players Facilities all spill out onto a new terraced area and the players race is accessed directly from this terrace, allowing club members and VIPs to watch the game and mingle with club and players alike.
On the first floor of the football building is a new 450m2 Function Area with Bar and Warming Kitchen which is linked back to the existing HBF Arena Building via a new Link Bridge which also creates the new Entry Point over the Football Entry Gates. A 100m2 sub-lettable tenancy is also attached to the football club.
The Undercroft Change-room upgrades will completely refurbish the existing football change-rooms for the visiting WAFL teams, and also for Junior and Community Club level facilities.
Sandover Pinder Architects completed the Schematic Design and DA, and the EMCO project team commenced work on Design Development and Contract Documentation in May 2016. Construction works commenced on site early September 2016 and will be completed as three separable portions, with the Undercroft Change-room completed December 2016, the Basketball Hall September 2017 and the Football Facilities October 2017.
