The Geraldton Health Campus provides an integrated patient-orientated facility reflecting the rapidly changing health system in Western Australia and the region. The facility provides a comprehensive range of services which are easily accessible to all patients and visitors, whilst taking careful consideration of the regional environment resulting in a highly sustainable and flexible health care facility addressing the vast range of cultural diversity present in the region.
The facility replaces an older complex of buildings and provides 66 new beds in a compact two-level solution organised around two central courtyard spaces.
Colour has been carefully selected to complement the sand dunes, the earth colour and the bright colours of man-made objects in the environment.
Building forms are derived from the local environment’s dunal landscape, and adjacent flat topped hills. The Geraldton breeze is expressed in a “wobbly” weathered steel clad canopy across the northern elevation, providing sunscreening to the upper level windows.
By their very nature hospitals are highly complex, highly serviced buildings and this facility contains specialised mechanical, electrical and hydraulic services, each designed to provide high quality, efficiency and ease of maintenance whilst complying with very demanding health care guidelines.
A number of principles have been employed to provide ecological sustainability including orientation, sun screens, body tinted glass, light coloured roofing deck and minimal landscaping.
