Facelift for a Fremantle high school

Two local Fremantle schools, South Fremantle and Hamilton Senior High Schools, will amalgamate at the end of the 2017 school year, opening in January 2018 as Fremantle College – a new school on the former South Fremantle site.  JCY architects are responsible for the design and contract administration of a new Performing Arts and Theatre Building at the front of the school as well as refurbishment to large areas of the existing school buildings, many of which date back to the late 1960s.

The first stage of the refurbishment program on the South Fremantle Senior High School site was recently completed in time for the commencement of the 2017 school year.  These elements included the creation of a new Administration Block, upgrades to Toilet Blocks and the modernisation and refurbishment of IT classrooms.  Work in the Design and Technology teaching spaces have resulted in a new Machine Room, Woodwork, Mechatronics and Composite Engineering rooms.

Further refurbishment works are continuing throughout the year.  Currently underway is the construction of new Visual and Digital Arts Teaching and Learning spaces, a new Commercial Kitchen and Restaurant and facilities for Student Services and the school’s Senior School Engagement Program.  These will complement the new building also under construction which contains 16 General Learning Areas, 6 Science Laboratories and a Performing Arts Facility.

Deputy Principal (Transition) Neil Wilson said the new buildings and refurbishments have created a modern feel to the original school buildings, which won design awards in 1969.  Students and staff are enjoying the new facilities with their light and airy learning spaces that still maintain many features of the original design and build.

The new blocks and refurbished buildings and surrounding grounds will create a visually appealing, modern facility that will continue to address student needs well into the future.
